This place had great reviews so we decided to give it a try while in town visiting family. One of the reasons we chose it was for the burgers and they were out of burgers when we went to order. This can happen but it does lend to our disappointment. The catfish was not very good. It sure didn't seem like fresh made. It was flat, thin, and dark; just weird. The grilled chicken sandwich had great flavor but was very tough. The Italian beef was overly salty and just not tasty. The fries and onion rings were okay.... typical diner sides. While it may not be completely fair, my time at Mary Lou's from 1974 to 1977 holds a cherished spot in my memory. I had friends studying nearby, and I relished the incredible biscuits and gravy, as well as the delicious pie. Mary Lou even took the time to teach me how to make her famous sausage gravy, a dish I still enjoy preparing for my family today. Wherever you are, Mary Lou, I think of you often over the years. What a fantastic place! The breakfast includes an appetizer of biscuits and sausage gravy, which is a delightful touch. The cook at the grill really knows how to prepare a steak; my steak and eggs were exceptional, and the home fries were delicious too. The only downside was that the meal was so satisfying that I couldn't fit in any blackberry cobbler! I noticed the guy next to me had a huge slice of coconut pie that looked absolutely scrumptious as well. Next time I'm in Carbondale, I think I'll start with dessert and see where that takes me. The service was excellent, too!
I usually don't leave negative reviews, but this was by far the worst dining experience I've ever had. I ordered fish, and it turned out to be an extremely old frozen filet that lacked any fish flavor. It was raw in the middle, and the breading had a terrible, stale taste. I couldn't eat it at all. The fish was watery and completely flavorless. To make matters worse, it came with no sides, and considering the price, it just wasn't worth it. I had to order fries separately and pay extra for them. I won’t be returning to this place.

This type of place is in my list of favorites not just for the great food but also the awesome service we receive every time we are there... I love the family-like/friends treatment we get and we are always full and happy when we leave... Thank you for being a Carbondale staple!!! Love you guys!
Absolutely the best food in town! The biscuits and gravy are fantastic—make sure to try them before they’re gone! The service is top-notch; they truly make you feel like part of the family.
Without a doubt, this is the best food in Carbondale! My husband and I absolutely love it! We make it a point to have breakfast here every morning we can. We will definitely be back!

You MUST go to Mary Lou's when in Carbondale! This is an old time diner at it's best.
