I came here on Valentines day with my wife and another couple and was hoping to be converted from my existing belief that the word 'tapas ' actually means the act of charging someone more for the same quantity of goods . Great tastes agreed by all but most felt for the price the size of the servings should have been a little more pleasing. 2 people had barramundi $31.00 but there was nothing more than a small piece of fish on the plate. We went to a restaurant with Luke Mangan's name on it, expecting a great experience. Unfortunately, it was not at all what we had hoped for. The staff seemed surprised to see us, despite my reservation. The place was cold, empty, and the bar didn't even serve drinks. The online menu we had seen advertised share plates, which we were excited about, but when we arrived we were told it was a limited brunch menu on the weekend. We went to Mojo on a rare night away from the kids while on holidays in Sydney and loved it. On the downside, I needed to use my phone light to read the menu as the only night light is a single tea light candle on the table, and the service was mostly efficient but not overly attentive or friendly, (we had to ask for dishes to be taken away, dessert menu etc). The food, on the other hand, was delicious. 3 tapas-style share plates and some olives/feta/bread, 2 desserts, a couple of soft drinks and coffee had us rolling out the door fully stuffed and at under $110 (we didn't have alcohol). Mojos is a big open warehouse-style venue with trendy lighting, a front cocktail bar and open kitchen at the back. These details make it good place to host a birthday party. Our server was lovely and very accomodating, but what was coming out of the kitchen was sub par. Dining off the shared set menu, they started us off with kingfish sashimi in a curry like dressing. This was my favorite of the night but I didn't love it. Beetroot salad was nothing sepcial, prawn tacos were a bit pedestrian and the lamb ribs were dry and not-so-fall-off-the-bone. went to a great event #brunchoffun at Mojo today. Customers paid a $5 entry (not exactly sure what for.. perhaps to pay the DJ?? but inside was a set up of brunch food to purchase bagel, burger or a granola. There were cocktails to buy, a DJ playing, selling coffee and all in all, a great atmosphere. Mangan was there talking to guests and there was a good vibe. Luke mangan's restaurant is hidden away in quiet Waterloo. It's got a small menu however the food is well presented. The kingfish sashimi and fish tacos were really tasty and were highlights however the twice cooked pork belly and fish main were just ok. Staffed by friendly waiters this place is a gem. Just be aware it is a littlepricier than most of the other places around. Be great if they expanded on the menu
Not sure what I felt like to eat, so decided to stop by Mojo by Luke Mangan to see if they could tempt my taste buds. And tempt they did. The standout for me was the soft shell crab slider, but the oysters were fresh and creamy, and the fish taco had a great sauce too (which I would have liked more of).
