Looking for somewhere not too touristy to lunch after a visit to Giverny, we decided to pop over the river to Vernon. We initially walked past this place, as the menu was so massive that we assumed it wouldn't be good quality food, but finally there was nothing else obviously open (public holiday!) so we settled for a table outside in the sun. How wrong we were - the food was outstanding, as was the service. I had the Magret de Canard (Duck breast), and my companions had the Assiette de foie gras, a pizza (Montagnarde) and a Cassoulette (a sort of gratin). We were all blown away by the quality, care and tastiness of the dishes. The service was great too - even though the waitress was by herself for about 10 full tables. We weren't in a rush, and it wouldn't have been a good place for a quick bite, but when you've got quality food like that you can't rush the meal anyway! We also all had an apéritif - 3 kir royals and a beer, and then had plenty of water (and sunblock!) to combat the lovely summer heat. We were all game for dessert too, which was such a good decision. I had the banana split, and around the table we also had a tiramisu, an iced nougat with a sumptuous berry coulis, and a café gourmand that came with mini chocolate mousse, crème brûlée (which I had to try and was AMAZING), a tarte aux pommes and a mi-cuit au chocolat. We were so welcomed, treated so well, had an amazing lunch that extended over 2 hours, and left full to bursting with wonderful food. I will never go anywhere else now when in the area! PS. Check out my photo of the highly detailed food allergens information on the back of the menu! A rare thing in France and so useful for anyone with intolerances or allergies.
