TL;DR Food is nothing but average: too much garlic and overcooked. Service is average and nothing better. I got to get this out of the way first, out server was SO ANNOYING. Every single time he came up to our table, he would ask us if we were celebrating something. Every time we'd say no. Every time he kept asking. It clearly shows inattentiveness. We ordered a bunch of dishes. We ordered oysters Rockefeller, escargot and frog legs for starters. The oysters were very good, but the escargot and frog legs had WAY too much garlic. Papillon is our favorite for special occasions. We would go more often but we live an hour away by car. For New Year's Eve there was a fixed price menu with multiple options for each course. Three of us had filet minon with crab meat and hollandaise sauce, and one had grilled salmon with crab meat. Everything was superb. The wine list is extensive with many varieties from California, France and a few other countries. The proprietor is as nice a person as you'll ever meet.
We have been to Papillon many times over the last seventeen years. Celebrating my birthday at the restaurant with son-in-law and daughter was an outstanding experience and beyond expectation. Superbly cooked and presented Haddock, Ducking, Salad and Onion Soup. The staff were attentive and professional. This was an extremely well chosen location for a farewell dinner. Much appreciate the staff, their attention to detail and the especially that farewell plate for dessert. Some might say it's pricey but I say you get what you pay for. I am not hungry in my belly or in my soul tonight.

Best French restaurant in the East Bay. An amazing place with amazing food. Great for birthdays and the owner makes it a very personal first time experience. I tried almost ten different things from the menu and everything was great. I'll be coming back.
Staff were outstanding!! Loved the escargot and Oyster Rockefeller. The Chocolate Mousse with cake desert was fantastic and was the highlight of the meal. Great beer selection and cocktails. I hope a Happy Hour menu is added.
Great experience. Third generation owner is very nice and the food is excellent. He made me a table side strawberry flambee for my birthday. Everything was better than I hoped. Highly recommended!
The atmosphere is old cosey French. Separate booths with curtains for privacy if you desire. The customer service is individual attentive and outstanding.

Excellent service by staff, especially Connor, the waiter. Delicious meal. Excellent wine selection. Restaurant with longevity.
