I found out about R Cottage from a local resident in Gravenhurst (about 12 miles away). There's a reason for this. Word of mouth is probably this restaurant's greatest form of advertising. As others have pointed out, reservations are pretty much necessary. I was able to get a table for dinner on the same day I called. Having never been, I wasn't sure what to expect as the décor is very rustic and the dining area is very small (cozy as some may put it), having only about four tables and only a few more in the "sun room".Throughout dinner, there were quite a few people coming in to pick up take out orders. Our first visit and can't wait to go back. We went for dinner.Ordered the Smoked Prime Ribber Dip, House salad and the Pick R Pickle, extra garlic. We were splitting the meal.The Smoked Prime Ribber Dip was delicious, tender and very tasty.. We substituted the sheep cheese for cheddar cheese. The wild mushroom jus was equally delicious, along with the garlic Provencal bun. A Match made in heaven. The extra garlic pickle was so good, that we bought 2 jars to take home.The house salad fresh and delicious . We loved the tasty maple balsamic vinaignetta. Everything was perfect, delicious. Congrats to the chef!
We decided to go on our regular Friday night dinner out, with 2 other couples, to a not so regular place! It is very small but cozy and every detail has been considered in order to make it like 'our cottage'! Because it is so little, reservations are a must! The meals are very good, varied in selection but not your normal hamburger joint. You can have just a salad, or a prime roast dinner, ordered just the way you like it! Staff is very courteous and accomodating. All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening!
Stopped here today, perused the menu, and saw lots of stuff that my FODMAP diet says I can't have. Asked the waitress about leaving things out of the potato skins, she checked with the chef, and my request was accommodated. And they were excellent! Rather, I should say they ARE excellent, because I brought two home for lunch tomorrow. Washed them down with a Thornbury cider. I will certainly return, and bring others.
My wife and I chose to celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary at "R" Cottageafter seeing what friends had to say about it. I must say it was the best decision we had made since marrying each other. Food was to die for and the atmosphere was perfect I highly recommend "R" Cottage if you are looking for a date night or out for a drive in cottage country heck just to make plans and go will work.
Great atmosphere just like hanging out at your cottage for a meal with friends. We never had a bad meal and the food is fresh and made to order. Reservations are a must if you want to dine in the "dinning room" otherwise walk-in and take your chance in getting seating in the front "sun-room" or patio. On this visit we sat at the window bar which was fun.
I had an amazing grilled cheese with cranberries, various cheeses and some kind of funky bacon. To die for. My wife had a "bison " hamburger ( I think it was" as we each shared and devoured it. Macaroni salad with duck and an amzing home made potato salad. You just gotta eat here, but please don't so you can save us space as there are not many tables.
