My wife and I are on a 2 week trip around France, and by chance started chatting with an English ex-pat whilst in Menton, (near the Italian border). When he heard that our next stopover would be in Sainte-Maxime he recommended Restaurant Fred.So, on a strangers word we arrived and had a look for ourselves ! It's set back about 3 streets away from the Port area.The welcome from Owner Fred and other staff (parents?) was amongst the friendliest we've experienced during the whole trip. We found this little restaurant on our first night in St Maxime quite by chance wandering down one of the little back streets. The owner Fred is very charming and spoke very good English as our French was a bit basic. We ended up going back there for 2 more nights during our stay in St Maxime- testament to the food as there are lots of establishments to choose from in this town. The calamari in garlic and butter was delicious. The kids tried frogs legs which they really liked. The sea bass fillet with blanc beurre was lovely and my husband had a delicious tuna tataki one night which was great. My son can vouch for the homemade lasagne too. We hope to return if we visit St Maxime again.
The place: A small restaurant in a side street to the main pedestrian street. Servings done inside and outside (covered seatings). Not a very big place, and quite cosy.The food: Homemade and absolutely good and tasty. A lunch menu for 18.50 eur was this day Moules Casoulette, Veal sautee, Apple tarte (3 dishes).Wine and drinks: Fine small winelist, and also Pichets with local Provence wine.Service: Kind and smiling, quick and effective.Others: A very good alternative to mainstreet cafees and restaurants. This day we only saw locals eating here, besides ourselves.
We dine hear when the town is over-full in the height of the season because you can usually get a reservation and it is not stuffed full of hot, sweaty tourists. The food is fine, but not gourmet. We had a bit of a wait on a busy night the other evening, but the husband and wife team are good hosts and make you very welcome. Most of the tables are inside, which is cool, but there are a few in a small terrace. If you want to escape the hurly burly, give it a go. Recommend the frogs legs!

We visited Fred's with family and chose the menu of the day.The food was excellent. Even though it is catgorised as a French food, we ate Nems and Thai curry chicken, which were both delicious. The owner, Fred was very attentive with the customers also in English. The restaurant is litteän bit off the very center, maybe 50 meters, which is also nice because it's more peacefull.
As a couple we were treated to a meal by my girlfriend's parents.. and accompanied by her sister we decided to eat here. The food was.... AMAZING!The steaks with peppercorn sauce were sublime, I'm told. I had veal kidneys in a Madeira sauce and those were fantastic. Wine was excellent lAll together a wonderful evening out with a very pleasant host. Will visit again definitely.
We ate here three times on our recent holiday . Lunch very good value. The 35 euro menu was our favourite.... The filet de beouf just perfect . Our friends also enjoyed the fish soup , and lobster gratin. Good wine list, and the owner Fred is on hand to advise. Hope to visit again on our next trip .
A little higher up from the main pedestrian street you will find "FRED". A small restaurant with service inside and on the outdoor terrasse (covered).We had Moules on Curry, and Steak Milanese. Superb - based on good raw materials, nothing fancy, just well done and with good taste.

The chez Fred girls return to see Fred! The food, welcome and atmosphere are hard to beat at this restaurant . Indeed the food is probably the best in town and it's reasonably priced. A lovely evening
