This coffee shop was a relaxing spot to enjoy a cup of coffee. If you're looking for a quick drink, this may not be the place for you as each latte is made with special care and attention by the barista. I had a great conversation with him, who I believe may be the owner. He was incredibly kind and welcoming to everyone who came in. His positive attitude gave us good vibes for the rest of the day. Middlebury is lucky to have two great coffee shops. Royal Oak is small, intimate, welcoming. Good music playing. As an ex-craft coffee bar owner, I can say that these folks know their trade. Perfect coffee drinks, executed quickly and with a smile. The food offerings are minimal. That’s not a bad thing, just a fact. They also sell locally roasted high quality coffee beans. Plenty of coffee options with a bit of a twist, but more importantly, just done well. The staff is very friendly and thorough with your order. The place is small but fits perfectly as a coffee house with your visit. Set inside at the counter and enjoy their vinyl tunes or take your order downtown to explore, either way, you'll be satisfied. I visited Royal Oak on a weekday morning based on the suggestion of a Middlebury student. I'm so glad I did! The mocha latte I had was the best I've ever tasted. The owner/barista was skilled and friendly, making the experience even better. This is a must-stop if you're in the area. I give it top ratings for food, service, and atmosphere.

The coffee and lattes at this restaurant are quite good. However, the portions are small and the prices are a bit high. The food is rated 5, the service is rated 4, and the atmosphere is rated 4.
The coffee with egg milk is delicious and the atmosphere is charming. I don't eat a lot in general, but the baked options are often vegan - just ask the staff.
