ONLY seven months OLD AND already DOUG Hope's 'Sper Restaurant reigns as a astronomical sensation in the renewed village of Warkworth.NOW he's taken the experience with the opening of a unique Wednesday market featuring organic meats and vegetables, wonderful spices, fermented sodas, Buddha Belly gluten free baking and Doug's fabulous take away Treat of the Week featuring a succulent salad, memorable main course and irresistible dessert.It's worth the trip to Warkworth and, while you're there, stroll along the main street and see why the little village is being celebrated as a welcoming artisan, rainbow community.
We had heard good things about ´Sper and made reservations some time ago. We had been looking forward to it, and were not disappointed. We were two couples and were seated together at one table. All the other guests (10) were at one other large table. Dinner lasted more than three hours. It was one delicious course after another. Lots of interaction (including laughs) with the waitress, who was efficient and delightful, and the chef. One of our party had a food allergy, which they handled perfectly. (I would mention allergies when making the reservation.)
Our harvest table was set close to the kitchen where the 6 guests were able to interact with Doug Hope - the chef, farmer and host (along with his charming hostess) was able to guide us through his multi-course dinner. Not only did Doug cook the meal, he raised the food on his farm, foraged for many of the ingredients and made the table and many of the serving pieces. Our meal took over 3 hours and by the end we had been transported to the hills of Northumberland for a lovely escape.
A delicious eight-course gourmet meal prepared by a master chef using his self-grown and gathered ingredients., for just $65 plus alcohol, tax and tip. A three-hour parade of intense fresh flavours. And a rollicking social event, using a couple of shared communal tables. I can't begin to list all the taste sensations. It's not easy to get a reservation. Our dining experience at Sper was out of this world! Chef Douglas Hope uses fresh local ingredients and meat from his farm to create truly ingenious dishes. We were surprised and impressed that everything is homemade (the bread, the sorbet, birch/maple syrup, cured meats, etc.) and every course included unique and exotic flavours that were absolutely delicious. We will be back! Even the coffee is roasted at the local cafe. Must try.
Perfect! Chef Hope uses locally sourced meats and produce, including ducks, turkeys, geese, quail, hogs and vegetables from his own farm. Presentations are amazing. It's a fixed price menu which is a bargain considering the quality of the food. Allow at least three hours for this dining experience.
