Our group of about 14 people consisted of mainly retired ex-colleagues and some spouses who had worked together in Southam, occasionally enjoying lunch together at The Bell when it served the biggest, tastiest plaice I’ve ever seen. Since then it has been spectacularly modernised, with very comfortable seating and a log fire, with a very varied and modern menu that was very well-enjoyed by all of us, including vegetarians/vegans. Liaison with staff and managers was excellent, from when we booked and ordered, right through to arrival, service and payment. Unfortunately five people withdrew on the day because of illness/family circumstances, and these were not charged for, as they had notified The Bell before their food had been prepared and cooked. The stuffed chicken breast was particularly outstanding, and there were good portions of all meals, including fish and chips. Prices were very reasonable. We were seated in a discrete area on our own, with plenty of space. We would definitely recommend The Bell in its modern incarnation and certainly hope to visit again.
Have been here lots of times and always enjoyed it but not today. Service was okay. Having been asked if we would like to stay at our table in the bar to eat instead of our reserved table in the restaurant, we had to move after being smoked out of the room by a mishap with the fire. Happily, we settled into our table in the restaurant and all four of us ordered and looked forward to the beef bourguinion. What a disappointment. The beef was served shredded in a moulded shape and completely dry and stringy. The fondant potato was a bit like a moulded boiled, tasteless fake fondant (no softness to be had in the middle). A few onions and a smidgeon of gravy completed the picture. Our waitress was not the happiest person, possibly as she unfortunately was responsible for the fire mishap, poor girl. Hope she did not get reprimanded. Not cheap, we left a good tip in the spirit of Christmas but might not be our first choice for a while.
Beautiful place and decorated perfectly for Christmas. Food was excellent and we all enjoyed. The waiting staff ignored us several times when we had eye contact. The young waiter seemed to be busy doing nothing or leaning on the bar. Our first visit and maybe where we were situated (on the right of the pub not in the main restaurant) we got overlooked as far as service. Had to get up from the table to request a drink order (not a problem) but they missed out as we were hoping for several drink rounds and we only had 2 due to waiters avoiding us. Dogs were in the eating area (my own fault for not checking first) and we are not dog lovers. We were each given an envelope with discounts for our next visit. Shame as we were recommended this pub but sadly won’t be returning.
