I cannot understand all the positive reviews as this is by far the worst pub/restaurant I have ever been to. My parents live locally and had booked it for my mums 79th birthday. Emma and I had the pleasure of hosting our wedding reception/party at the Chequered Skipper in June. We couldn’t have been happier with the whole experience from start to finish. The venue is stunning and the separate function room is perfect for weddings or bigger...functions with its own bar and private indoor and outdoor spaces. We went for a meal Friday, the sign as u enter tells you that the place is open from 12-00 till 10-30, it’s not !! our table was booked for 6. We got there 10 mins before to be told they weren’t open till 6...and to wait outside. A couple walked in 3mins after us and was seated at their table. When we did sit down the chairs and table were wobbly. We asked to be moved, which they did. The service at this restaurant is excellent, as is the menu, especially for vegetarians. The wine choices are also top-notch. It's always a good sign when you are warmly welcomed and the staff is knowledgeable about the menu. Our server, Jo, was friendly and helpful with our menu selections. The tempura broccoli with miso dressing and pickled fennel were out of this world, as were the stuffed goat cheese with courgette flowers. For our main dishes, we had the courgette falafel burger and rib eye steaks with Stilton and peppercorn sauce, all cooked to perfection. Went for a birthday meal. Food was disappointingly average and quite bland. Crab cakes were unseasoned and tasteless. Pork was supposed to be cider flavoured but again tasteless. Rice that came with that curry was watery. Rocket and Parmesan salad was just that and no...balsamic available in the premises. May have been an off day for the chef but to be honest we expected more so won’t be returning. Real shame as it is a beautiful location and the staff were friendly.
We visited the Chequered Skipper today for a Fathers Day lunch and were not disappointed! We had Jo serve us, she was so friendly and helpful and went out of her way to help accommodate our requirements when our daughter would not eat anything off...the set menu. The food was delicious! Well presented delivered in a timely manner, hot on arrival and full of flavour. Thank you for a lovely lunch special thanks to Jo! We will definitely be visiting again soon!
On Friday, the 28th, six friends and I gathered in the evening for a meeting at the restaurant. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the food was delicious. Our group thoroughly enjoyed everything and we will definitely be returning. We highly recommend paying a visit to this restaurant, as it is truly worth it. - Pete and Dixon

We recently dined at Chequered-S Kipper and were thoroughly impressed. The menu was extensive, the wine selection was excellent, and the atmosphere was relaxing with attentive service.
The food we had (back in March 2022) was pleasant but service dreadfully slow and not all options were available. My companions say they will not go back.
