"Stayed here on New Year’s Day, lovely rooms nice warm, with a comfy bed. My mrs forgot her Apple Watch and they rang within minutes of us leaving to inform us, which was nice. Cannot fault these guys. Will be staying next time I’m in Lancaster."

A pub but a really nice almost high end finish type of pub with very nice rooms to boot! This is not your usual place to stop by and have an average stay with average food. Everything about the place is welcoming and has attention to detail. Rooms have space, with comfortable beds and nice quality linen. The hotel part is fairly quiet too. The restaurant and bar is where things really shine. The bar has 100 ! varieties of whisky. Never seen this elsewhere in the UK. Breakfasts and their quality is something of local legend. People jump to get onto the best tables bang on time because they know the Sun is popular for food and the quality is uncharacteristically apart from British humdrum. Try their Sunday roast. The trimmings are quality with everything cooked by a real pro of a chef. Just make sure if you get beef, ask for it to be well cooked, I wished I'd asked for this for what was otherwise a posh roast dinner. Only downside with the place is that they are understaffed and therefore service suffers from speed. Taking all that on board however you'd do yourself a favour staying at this excellent establishment be it just for a drink and a meal, or also becoming a lodger for a few nights. Recommended!
I came here for drinks for a friends birthday. The venue is very pleasant and the drinks were nice, but unfortunately our experience was ruined by a really rude member of staff. She brought our drinks over, and I asked if we could please order more. She barked at me to use the button on the table to request a server to come over. I explained I had pressed it several times but no one had come over. She then barked at a member of staff busy at another table to serve us. I have no idea why this server couldn’t do it. Then one of the drinks was wrong and she just blamed us for ordering wrong, which of course it possible, but her attitude was really unnecessary and just rude. I understand that bar work can be really stressful, having worked in the industry for many years myself, but there is no excuse for taking out your bad mood on customers. The other server we had was very nice and we told her about the other servers poor service. She said that this server often gets very stressed and can often be like that. Based on this experience I wouldn’t return here.
I was there for business. Much more a holiday hotel. Breakfast served at 7:30am with doors to bar/restaurant locked until then. You can get out however the fire route was lined on one day with rubbish bags, the next with towels. They did say they'd sort it but it's a major fire hazard and it looked like something they normally do. I can't say whether they changed. On the positive side, the room was lovely and spacious, beautiful old building with lots of history very well done. The food was fabulous. Really tasty. Most of the staff were lovely too. Knocked off stars for the fire hazard. Fire routes should always remain clear.
The staff here are so friendly and helpful from the moment you walk through the door. Great welcome at reception, efficient but personal online check-in, very comfortable bed, superb quality breakfast, cooked perfectly. Also excellent website, lovely old building, amazing range of local beers etc. Wish I'd been staying more than just one night!
