My twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping around this beautiful town on a four day break when we chanced upon Merchants and what a great find. Walking in and I knew I would enjoy my visit here, the interior is spectacular,a century wine cellar , beautiful exposed stone vaulted ceilings, pubby decor and furnishings, an eye catching serving bar dominates the main room, there's wonderful features throughout this pub ,there's also plenty of seating options spread throughout both inside and outside in their beer garden out front, all in all its a great pub to unwind in. We were here on a freezing cold and rainy night, pub was warm as was the welcome from the staff, we had a study of their beer range and we both opted to have a pale ale each from Jennings Brewery, these were served in pristine condition, we just kicked back, chilled out and took in the great pub we were in. My pale ale was really good, a crisp, well balanced pale ale, hints of toffee and a delicious aroma and aftertaste with a slight bitter finish to it, a classic British pale ale, it was just so good being in such a lovely pub enjoying a quality brew. I must say the staff in this pub are really friendly, on our visit they made us so welcomed. We really enjoyed our pale ale's in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting for a first time visit to Merchants we were more than impressed and when we are back in Lancaster next, hopefully very soon this will be at the top of our list of pubs to revisit. Merchants is easy to locate along Castle Hill. Opening hours are; Monday to Thursday, till Friday Saturday, till Midnight. Sunday, Midday till A wonderful pub, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area or planning to visit Lancaster.

Another ‘must visit’ in Lancaster. The place itself is worth a look with its three barrel vaulted main rooms off the bar area. The staff were as friendly and helpful as ever and the choice of ales good – a nice cross-section. There was, on...this occasion, a gluten free ale (used for the batter on the gluten free fish and chips – yum Yes, well worth a visit if you need to eat gluten free, which we did – they have always reliably looked after us on this score and did again. The gluten free fish and chips was most enjoyable. That certainly bodes well for ALL food on offer! The right and left vaults are for drinking and bar food service, whereas the central room has table service. We always visit Merchants when we come to Lancaster and very much hope we can say that again and again.

We wanted a nice Sunday lunch with family members we hadn't been able to see in two years , and this definitely wasn't the place to take them. It was busy but not extremely busy so you'd expect better service and better quality of food...for the money we paid . What we got was slow service and a mixture of both stone cold food and scolding hot food on the same plate. Mash potatoes stone cold roast potatoes so hot you couldn't hold them in your mouth) Didn't complain because we had waited so long in between courses . The only good point was they were helpful when asking about gluten free diets .

Just called in for a drink. Many people eating reserved tables, but staff were helpful and we sat in an unreserve vaulted cellar area. Good atmosphere and the beers that we ordered were all spot on. Would recommend calling in. Its just down the...road from the station
