My twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping around this beautiful town on a four day break when we chanced upon Merchants and what a great find. Walking in and I knew I would enjoy my visit here, the interior is spectacular,a century wine cellar , beautiful exposed stone vaulted ceilings, pubby decor and furnishings, an eye catching serving bar dominates the main room, there's wonderful features throughout this pub ,there's also plenty of seating options spread throughout both inside and outside in their beer garden out front, all in all its a great pub to unwind in. We were here on a freezing cold and rainy night, pub was warm as was the welcome from the staff, we had a study of their beer range and we both opted to have a pale ale each from Jennings Brewery, these were served in pristine condition, we just kicked back, chilled out and took in the great pub we were in. My pale ale was really good, a crisp, well balanced pale ale, hints of toffee and a delicious aroma and aftertaste with a slight bitter finish to it, a classic British pale ale, it was just so good being in such a lovely pub enjoying a quality brew. I must say the staff in this pub are really friendly, on our visit they made us so welcomed. We really enjoyed our pale ale's in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting for a first time visit to Merchants we were more than impressed and when we are back in Lancaster next, hopefully very soon this will be at the top of our list of pubs to revisit. Merchants is easy to locate along Castle Hill. Opening hours are; Monday to Thursday, till Friday Saturday, till Midnight. Sunday, Midday till A wonderful pub, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area or planning to visit Lancaster.
