The Lunch Box probably makes the best sandwiches in the world in my opinion. I live right around the corner and always pass by them. There's always a crowd waiting outside their storefront. They have picnic benches for those who are waiting or want to eat outside. It's a great place to pick up lunch and go somewhere to eat like Lake Merritt. CURRENTLY OPEN DURING LOCKDOWN This place gives me the warm fuzzies. It?s a true mom and pop shop! There?s something very paternal about coming here, the owners remember you, it?s a beautiful sense of community. They are currently open during lockdown so call in an order or order online thru their website. My fave is the chicken salad sando (on Dutch crunch of course this is Northern California isn?t it? but the bbq beef brisket is a close second. Honestly it?s always hard to choose. They?ve got a bomb selection on drinks, chips and candies too! Also, respect to any sandwich shop that offers American cheese.
While there is a ton of sandwich options in Downtown Oakland, from national chains to state chains, Lunch Box is by far the best. With amazing classic sandwiches, wraps, salads and a selection of daily soups. They also make their own brisket, pastrami and roast their own turkey. My goto sandwiches are the Americans (ham and turkey), brisket and meatball, but if I try to eat healthier, I like the turkey avocado wrap on spinach. My favorite soups are chicken wild rice, baked potato bacon and tomato bisque. Also recommend checking the huge chips and candy selection before you go.

This was my first time ordering from Lunch Box, and it was fantastic. I ordered an American with double meat (turkey and ham) on french bread, with lettuce, tomato, honey mustard, and sweet pepper tapenade. The bread was perfectly toasted, the meats and tapenade were delicious, and it was the best sandwich I've had in a long time.

Super delicious, even for the vegetarian! I got an avocado and cheese on dutch crust and wow, so good. They even have my dog a few slices of turkey for being cute. Can't wait until I'm back in the area!
