When we moved to NoVA a few years ago, my sister in law recommended Thompson Italian in Falls Church as being among the best Italian restaurants in the area...and she is right. After we celebrated Easter there in 2021, we've made the drive from Woodbridge to Falls Church multiple times to enjoy the Thompson hospitality.The menu occasionally changes, and the selections are always worthwhile. Everything we've ordered from appetizers, to entrees, to desserts, to drinks range from very good to excellent. The service at this restaurant was consistently poor from beginning to end. We decided to celebrate my mother's 65th birthday here in search of something new, but unfortunately, we were met with disappointment. We asked to switch tables because our mother couldn't comfortably sit on bar stools, but instead of accommodating our request, they offered a pillow. The waitress was impolite and our appetizers and main dishes were served simultaneously. While the food tasted great, the portions were significantly smaller than expected.
We have wanted to try Thompson Italian for the longest time. Food was tasty. But disappointing is the abrupt service provided by a particular server behind the bar not listening to her customers and was so tuned out that she cleared our left-overs without packing my husband 's meal even after we said we would like to take it home. I visited this restaurant early on a Saturday evening after visiting eight of Northern Virginia Magazine's Top Ten restaurants. There was plenty of room at the 13-seat bar when I arrived, but it started to get busier soon after. The bartender welcomed me warmly and served me a white wine spritzer as my opening drink. Amazing. Would return in a heartbeat if I lived closer. They have the most amazing bread to start the table with and the pasta was amazing. (I had the gluten free pasta. Great atmosphere and great service. I wish the weather was better so we could've eaten outside, but still a great experience. Would be a great date night spot or just a dinner/meal with friends or colleagues. Such a great find and I highly recommend going to eat here!
All the dishes we had were good?but did not wow us. It?s a place I would go again if I?m in the neighborhood, but not something I would go out of my way for. Also, what?s with their HVAC system? It did not keep a constant temperature in the restaurant during our visit. It would blow hot air until we were sweating, then it would switch to cold breeze until we need to put the jacket back on.
The food was absolutely delicious. The menu was small, often signaling higher quality. The portions were a good size. The bass was absolutely perfectly cooked and in a delicious white wine cream sauce with ramps. The mango sorbet was fantastic. This is a good restaurant for a special occasion but a bit pricey for a casual visit.
This charming restaurant has plenty of seating and a small outdoor patio as well. The appetizers and pasta were delicious! The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. The starters, salads, and pastas are where it?s at. They?re accessible but also thoughtful and seasonal. Desserts and bread are fantastic. Also, Juliet is an amazing server with a lovely personality and always treats my family and I like friends. Other servers here also have been excellent.
