Waldrestaurant Zur Steinkiste

We visited in December with our friends from Soest. The restaurant is a little way out into the countryside, in what was according to our friends a former Army training area. Steinkiste means, apparently, stone box which could refer to the stone structure of...the building or to an ancient grave found nearby. We were greeted by the owner/chef and his friendly staff, and seated at a nice table. The restaurant has a very good ambience. Our meals were delicious, and I was pleased to find a good range of vegetarian and vegan dishes available alongside many meat-based choices. The portions were large, and very reasonably priced. We will certainly be back on our next visit to Germany.

Waldrestaurant Zur Steinkiste is located in Soest, just south of the Autobahn The restaurant is not easy to find. Zur Steinkiste furniture is old-fashioned and the ambiance antiquated. We came on a Monday evening was the establishment empty, not a good sign. With...few restaurants near by we decided Zur Steinkiste a try. What a deception. The Kalbschnitzel was copious and mediocre. The asparagus with a mix of vinegar sugar appeared uneatable. Service is adequate.

Ex Forces will all remember the Steinkist' for the amazing food it hasn't changed at all! It's still family-run and so welcoming, the food portions are huge, perfectly cooked and presented. Challenge anyone to eat courses. You can sit over your meal for...the whole evening, quite comfortably. Note that it is closed on a Tuesday and it still gets busy so go early evening or make a booking.
