Did a study abroad trip in Heidelberg this Summer for weeks and nearly every time the class went out for food or a beer it was here at the Weisser Stein. This was not only for the selection of beer and delicous food but...the ownership and staff. The owner, Patrick, is not only friendly but the epitome of hospitality in making us feel welcome and at home regardless of the fact that we were American. The staff was friendly and very helpful in explaining the menu for us. Ownership is excellent and restaurant atmosphere is not only relaxed but family friendly. Their outdoor seating in the summer is to die for.
Found this establishment only because we took the walking option back from the Altstadt ending up at Handschuhsheim on the way back to our hotel. This is a down to earth, local place that serves pork based schnitzels (as well as burgers and a few...other items). The service is genuine, friendly and first class, the ambiance is relaxed, comfortable and the schnitzels are glorious. Recommend one or more of the litre doses of the local Schmucker beer as the perfect accompaniment to the delicious relaxed and professional dinners this place provides. Go there!
After living in Heidelberg off and on for 10 years with the US Army, I thought I knew most of the good places to eat. But I just found another gem. It is the Weisser Stein in Handschuheim. The prices, especially the Monday Schnitzel Day, were very competitive but the real find was the quality of the food and location. It is one street off the main street of Handschuheim in a quiet residential neighborhood with lovely hidden inner courtyard. The crowing jewel was Patrick the owner. He took time for a nice conversation that made us feel like locals.

We went on tour to Heidelberg and ended up here because we heard the schnitzel was good from locals and they were absolutely right! We got all sorts and everyone was happy. My three kids loved it too. The one who didn't eat schnitzel ate a lamb burger and enjoyed it a lot. It was great value and affordable. Service was solid, it was convenient and easy, we loved sitting outdoors, and the drinks were flowing. We are definitely going back whenever near Heidelberg!
We wanted somewhere ordinary' in the best sense, took a Number tram from the centre and weren't the least disappointed. In fact, this was one of the nicest meals of our ten-day holiday. Succulent steak for me, tasty chicken noodles for my wife, with...superb side-salads. German spirits to end with. All served by an enthusiastic and helpful waiter who seemed absolutely delighted to welcome two English visitors. We walked back to the centre along quiet streets.
Me and some friends were looking for a place to get good food and beer. Decided to check this out and we couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. Patrick the owner is very friendly and clearly has a passion for what he does....I had the Chili burger and it may have been the best burger I've ever had. The outdoor seating was so welcoming it felt like being welcomed into someones home. Highly recommend stopping here if you're ever in the area!
The service was superb, the staff and owner were super friendly and welcoming. As for the meal, we ordered delicious vegetarian burgers, fries and a salad (we even got some tips on how to prepare a similar dressing at home!)We ended the meal with a...lovely pastry like desert. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a local, super tasty (and cheap!)meal.

The food is great, the prices are great, and the staff and owner go above and beyond. My friends and I are visiting Heidelberg from the States, and have gone to this restaurant times already in our short stay. We plan to go back...more before leaving. Highly recommend.
The Weisser Stein has the best falafel burger I've had in Heidelberg! Not only that the owner Patrick is a really fun guy!
