We were really looking forward to trying the seafood platter. The presentation wasn 't exciting, felt like everything had just been plopped onto the platter with no thought. There was water and brine puddling on the platter, I overheard someone on the table next to us saying the same thing about theirs. Perhaps they were short-staffed and it was an off day because whoever prepared our platter had little experience and no love for seafood which is simple to prepare especially in a seafood restaurant. Most of the seafood had obviously just been defrosted, hence the water. I do feel that the seafood shouldn 't be advertised as being 'fresh ' when this isn 't the case, fresh should be advertised...
The restaurant had a convenient car park, which was a major plus for us. We ordered a seafood platter, cod and chips, and scallops. The staff were friendly, asking if we wanted everything served together and checking on us throughout the meal. The portion sizes were generous and the seafood was fresh. The only minor issue was that the peeled prawns and cockles seemed to be more concentrated in brine compared to another restaurant, but this didn't bother us. We decided to visit Mersea Island on a whim as the weather was great (21deg C on 29th Oct! . We had no lunch reservation but turned up at the West Mersea Oyster Bar and were able to get a table outside overlooking the water. The main restaurant was fully booked. We ordered from what is a fairly extensive menu, supplemented by some really interesting and tempting specials . Arrived early at the site but opening times at the restaurant is at 12noon..parked the car but was told we can’t park the car whilst waiting for the restaurant to open. Told the old man (staff) to place a barrier at the car park entrance (as it was open on our arrival) to avoid confusion. The old man’s attitude was so condescending that to represent the restaurant’s name is not very customer friendly. For a restaurant who relies on their customers, the staff’s attitude is not very customer friendly. Will not be eating here again.

Booked the Oyster Bar a couple of weeks ago for my anniversary,as I have been there many times and loved the food l was looking forward to a lovely lunch.i was aware that they did not do hot food now as was told when I booked,but when we arrived at restaurant it was closed ,after telephoning the number I had for them was told by answer machine that restaurant had closed down ,I never received any call to tell me i was so disappointed and surprised as always had great service .
Wow! What a fantastic meal we had here! From the minute we walked in we were greeted and asked to find a table, we then ordered our food and drinks at the bar, by some lovely staff members. The restaurant had a lovely vibe and the food was FANTASTIC! I am disappointed to read such bad reviews, as we did not have this experience on our visit. We have travelled down from Durham for a week to visit family, and we will certainly be back here for a meal. Thank-you
The restaurant was very crowded but we were able to snag a table outside in the sun with an umbrella. The service was quick and we started with a dozen oysters. The pickled shallots and fresh lemon were the perfect and traditional addition, and the quality of the oysters was impressive for the price. We also ordered a bowl of the best chips I've had in a long time - they were almost like mini roast potatoes! I can't wait to come back again.
Had the Seafood Platter for two and the Fish Chips absolutely amazing food. Great quality and quantity. Staff were v friendly and attentive. Highly recommend, but be prepared to wait at busy times as its all prepared and cooked fresh to order

I had an amazing lunch at this restaurant. The lobster chips and salad were delicious, well done to the staff. They were friendly and helpful. The lobster was particularly tasty. Can't wait to visit again soon! xxx
