A lovely place with beautiful surroundings. This was a group outing at the end of the season. After the meal there was music and dancing, and the owner joined in with the dancing . All in all a very nice experience.

Found the food very disappointing. We went to try the food with the thought of holding a private party there. Food is not what it use to be.

The nearest thing you will get to fine dining in Puerto Mazarrón. Nice surroundings, good service, good menu and good food. Not the cheapest but well worth going for a special occasion.

We visited this restaurant several years ago and had a great set menu. This time we stayed at the hotel to visit the restaurant to break a journey back south. We again opted for the set menu, all in all rather uninspiring and no choice of dessert which I find very unusual. Disappointing, perhaps a different chef, certainly not the same as the person who thought this was Michelin status,or perhaps he dosnt do food like ourselves.

Went here for dinner since we were staying at Playasol hotel. The menu was reasonably priced...€15 with a drink and dessert. The vegetable purée was pretty good, nice presentation...the main course was fish which was pretty good. Dessert was profiteroles which were also served very nicely. What I liked the most was that the owner (I think it was the owner) was very friendly and charismatic. He even recommended things to do near Bolnuevo. Would go again.

We have been to this restaurant 3 times in the past and had no issue with the meal or service. But on New Years Eve 2017, we were not greeted at the door or shown to our table. Once we found the table, someone had used one of the glasses and the remains of red wine were still in the glass. We dismissed this, but it took ten to fifteen minutes, before my husband got a waitress attention to ask for a drink, which we found annoying. We are not heavy drinkers, however, we had to ask everytime our glass was empty for a refill. We asked for mineral water, which took over half an hour to come to the table, after my husband reminded the waitress that we had asked for a bottle. The waitiress seem to fill the glasses around us, but we were ignored, only that my husband had to wave to her and asked for another drink. The starter was dry and had been in the fridge for a number of hours as the cream cheese had cracked. The fish course my wife could not eat as this was toooo salty. The meat dish of tournedos had to be returned five times and still the chef could not cook the meat correctly. My wife can not eat meat with blood inside, it has to be well done. In the end we had to explain to the Restaurant Manager the steak had to be sliced vertically and cooked, then she could eat it. Even after that the steak was still raw and the wife gave up on it. The service we received that night was very disappointing because every year we travel from the UK to Spain to celebrate the New Year, as we have done previously. The owner of the restaurant was apologetic, but the issue had already occured and spoilt the evening. Bruno La Montagna

We visit a good number of restaurants and cafes when we take a trip out to Spain to see my father-in-law and step-mother-in-law. This October’s trip was no exception and we were lucky enough to find one or two new great places as well as visit a few familiar places. One day during this trip we were on our way into Puerto de Mazarron to revisit a familiar place, but my wife’s Step Mother remembered that she had been told about a restaurant in Bolnuevo part of the Hotel Playasol . So we drove into this predominately residential district and followed the signs to Amapola, parking outside this unappealing modern looking and somewhat strangely located hotel. We entered the building and found our way to the restaurant. Although it was getting on for 1:45pm the restaurant was empty. We were greeted by a man in a tatty pullover who ushered us to a table. I noticed he quickly removed his pullover before returning with the “Menus-of-the day”. Frankly the signs were not good, and the menu did little to excite or dispel the feeling that we should have just carried on to Puerto. We ordered, once we had also obtained the Al a carte menu to see if that did anything to lift the spirits, and also once we had enquired whether the Curry main course could be served with plain rice rather than the stated Cous Cous which none of us have ever enjoyed We were informed that they could not offer rice, so if you wanted the curry which was one of two main courses on the Menu of the day it had to be Cous Cous. It then transpired that the dreaded Cous Cous could be replaced by potatoes. Accordingly, three curries were ordered, together with two soup starters and one salad. For myself, I decided that none of the very limited menu of the day offerings were ringing my bell, so I decided to try a starter and a main course from the Al a Carte. My depression at not now sitting in a known and liked restaurant in Puerto only got worse. My choice of Chicken Caesar salad, followed by Duck Magret with a Wild Mushroom sauce was an attempt at finding something to look forward to. I was mistaken. The Chicken Caesar Salad comprised some salad leaves in a bowl that had been splattered with a dressing that frankly did not resemble and Caesar dressing I’d ever eaten before, with no hint of anchovy, parmesan or usual ingredients. And resting on the top of the bowl of leaves was , as far as I could tell, strips of some Chicken dippers/goujons that had been sliced and bunged in a microwave, resulting in inedible strips of apparently uncooked compressed rubber in soggy oily breadcrumbs. Whilst dismissing my inedible starter, my father-in-law and Step-mother-in-law informed me that the soup was “pretty tasteless and uninteresting”, and my wife had lost interest in her unedifying salad. So next was the Duck. This arrived drenched in watery red current sauce, with two soggy and limp carrot batons, a single boiled potato that had been cut into quarters and one yellowing and cold broccoli floret, all served on a cold plate, and , guess what, not a hint or sight of a mushroom wild or otherwise . When I mentioned to the waiter that I seem to have the wrong sauce, and after some convincing, he consulted the menu himself, acknowledge that it did mention mushrooms setas silvestres , went into the kitchen from where we could hear an exchange of views that my very limited Spanish could not decipher , and then he returned to say “ yes it was the wrong sauce” . He smiled but offered no apology nor any recompense to the subsequent bill . I feel I should also mention the curry, which was not enjoyed by my wife or her father or Step mother. The curry comprised strips of chicken in a very mild, creamy and pretty tasteless gloup, and the potato alternative to the dreaded Cous Cous, was a pile albeit formed in a ring with a pastry cutter of barely cooked sliced new potato that my wife confirmed tasted more like candle. also served on a cold plate . To compound our misery and disappointment we thought we’d sample the dessert offerings after all they were included in the set menu price . We all choose what was described by the waiter as Panna Cotta dismissing the alternative of Profiteroles on the evidence of our experience thus far we thought Choux pastry would be a step too far for this chef . What we were presented with was in fact a cube of cheese cake on a sponge base and splattered with a coulis which strangely resembled the red current sauce I’d encountered earlier. So, in summary, all three of my courses as received were not as ordered; a Chicken Caesar salad that did not have Ceasar Dressing nor proper chicken, a Duck Magret in Wild Mushroom sauce, which was not Duck Magret and which had no Mushroom sauce and a Panna Cotta which had more in common with a poor cheesecake. The soup was tasteless and the curry an unmitigated flavourless disaster served with cold potatoes on a cold plate. Unsurprisingly, we did not stay for coffee, and I felt compelled to warn others that Restaurant Amapola is best avoided unless or until they have anyone in the kitchen who knows how to cook. The fact that only one other couple entered the restaurant during our visit, and were only there for less than fifteen minutes, provided further evidence that this place is not on the “must pop in for lunch” list for many people. As a scroll through any of my contributions to Trip Advisor will demonstrate, I normally take and post a photo or two of restaurants and particularly the dishes I’ve enjoyed. The lack of any images with this review is testament to the fact that there was nothing worthy of reaching for my camera and nothing that inspired me to even think to share a photograph. Based on this ill-advised detour from other places to eat, our recommendation regarding Amapola would be, don’t bother; there are many better places. We’ll just chalk this one down to experience and visit other tried and tested places in future. In fact, we then felt compelled to continue into Puerto de Mazarron to get a decent coffee and something enjoyable to eat with it.
