We were staying in Avignon for a few days and wandering the streets. We passed this place, thought it looked interesting and resolved to return for lunch one day. One of our best resolutions ever! This surpassed all our expectations. Every plate was a work of art and an explosion of various flavours. There is a four course menu for 42 euros appetiser, two mains and a dessert. We thought that might be far more than we could eat but there was no problem these are French portions. We would normally have a bottle of wine. There was much discussion with the owner about matching wines. She was very knowledgeable and had wines from small local wineries that we had never seen and will never see again. So we ended up having glasses of five different wines between us, all of which were superb and so well matched to the food. This whole experience was truly our most memorable moment in Avignon. Highly recommended, this is Michelin star territory. Vraiment, Alice a beaucoup de merveilles.

We tried to dine on Sunday evening, but this restaurant (with an understated Alice in Wonderland theme) was fully booked so we booked for the following day. It is very small, only about six tables, so the patronne is able to give everyone very personal service. The food is nouvelle cuisine style, beautifully cooked and presented. The choice is limited (but quite sufficient) as everything is freshly cooked and presented with great care. We had amuse bouches, starters then red mullet and a vegetarian dish (the description does not give it justice, but I have forgotten the name) and we both had a dessert of rhubarb, strawberries, meringue and cream, all with a bottle of excellent Luberon. Everything is sourced from local suppliers. It was all absolutely perfect, a very different and vastly superior unforgettable experience from the many perfectly good but mainly ordinary restaurants in Avignon.

We had been to Alice before and I thought it would make a good venue for my husband’s birthday yesterday. I had booked just over a week ago and received confirmation. However when we arrived yesterday evening we found the restaurant was closed despite our booking and the opening hours on the door. To add insult to injury, I received an automated email this morning asking whether I had enjoyed the meal! Surely if a restaurant has to close unexpectedly, they should try and notify those who have booked?

The menu and the presentation is first class. Heston Blumenthal style with a tilt to southern France ingredients makes this restaurant a not to be missed. Absolutely a must for anyone who loves their food!
