There's nothing about this cafe's name that hints at the type of cuisine it serves, this being Afghan. This happens to be an unusual type of food found in the Ashburton / Camberwell area. The present decor is contemporary, with a pressed tin counter and the standard accoutrements of a cafe serving good quality beans. We were in Ashburton for other reasons Sunday lunchtime and noticed this place served Afghani food. It looks like a normal cafe from the outside and does serve a normal breakfast and cake selections. The lunch and dinner menu offer a range of Afghani dishes. We ordered Chicken Kabuli Pallow ($13.50) and the Mantu lamb dumplings ($10.90). Both were quite tasty. They had spice but it was mild with no heat. This is a gem of a Restaurant! You'll be treated to a wide range of Traditional Afghani food. A must is the "Mantu", the Traditional Afghani Mince Dumplings. For your mains try the amazing Kebabs,the Kabuli Pallow ( Slow cooked Lamb Shank). My favorite is the Borani Banjan, which is fried eggplant with a fresh tomato and garlic sauce.The choice are never ending. We took two friends in their 80's for lunch and could hardly have been more satisfied with our food. The restaurant is Afghan and the choice of dishes is extensive. The waiter who is probably the owner was really helpful with choices and went out of his way to explain what each contained. Food arrived quickly, was really generous in its quantity, had great flavour and was really something of a surprise. It is not fine dining but it is honest, well presented, flavoursome food, served with pride and sold at incredibly low prices for the amount you get. The room is a bit sterile but the food compensates!

We ordered takeaway from here after a great deal of difficulty making sure the girl had got the order right and that she clearly understood that the dish for my wife must not contain chilli or spice because of a medical condition. What a joke after waiting longer than the quoted time when we got the order home my wife's dish was covered with spice applied after cooking and could not be eaten. ringing up to complain was like speaking to the talking clock.

This was our second dinner at Ashys and it did not disappoint. We shared two mains consisting of Mantu (Afghani dumplings) and an eggplant dish. . The servings were generous, the food mildly spiced but still flavourful, and great presentation. Service was fast and friendly and prices very reasonable, BYO wine is also a great advantage. Will definitely return.
This is our current favourite for Afghan food.....great biryani and awesome mantu dumplings (lamb and lentils) and the chicken kabuli pulao. The staff are friendly and attentive and the portions are very generous for the price. Definitely a go to place for comfort food and even takeaways.
