We made a reservation prior to the evening to dine at the Ayame Japanese Restaurant.This turned out to be a smart move, as all the tables were pre-reserved for the evening. It's a very popular restaurant, that's for sure.The place is lovely. The staff is very friendly, polite and kind.We started with entrees to share: gyoza and vegetable tempura.Then asked our mains to be brought out one after the other, so we can all share each meals. The first main was the Black Cod Miso. Hmmm it was a beautiful cod fillet with fresh, crispy vegetables and tasty black miso. It was perfectly cooked. It was such a light and delicious choice.The second one was the Duck Maryland with Chicken Meat Balls. Yummm!...
We were out for dinner with our son & daughter in law. Fortunately we had booked with numerous walk- ins turned away. This is an upmarket Japanese restaurant with tables set professionally & wait staff well trained. We started with gyoza described by my son as the best in Melbourne. Followed with sushi which was ok with a standout of kingfish. We shared 3 mains all good but disappointed the black cod with miso had bones !!! Meal was very good & with the option of BYO we would certainly return. One of the better Japanese restaurants in this side of the city.
Ayame has a nice, romantic, warm atmosphere, but its food is the star. We shared the Assorted Sushi and Sashimi - very fresh and delicious - followed by the Black Cod Miso that was outstanding. The cod was perfectly cooked, juicy and meaty and the miso marinade was excellent. The Green Tea Ice Cream - creamy and not too sweet - had a generous 3 scoops so we were glad we shared this also. All washed down with a nice sparkling wine. Service was good. Strongly recommend.
Our entree sushi/ sashimi platter was the highlight of the meal - fresh and delicious. Service needs a bit of work - they took ages to bring wine glasses and got our mains order very wrong. And after our plates from mains were removed, there was no offer of more drinks or dessert menu for so long that eventually we lost interest as it had got so late. It is a popular and busy place and if you don't book, it looks like you battle to get in.

These dishes are delicate... definitely the 'wow'' factor consistently. I love to take friends here that haven't eaten much Japanese food as I know they will be impressed! They let me order... byo wine and the meal becomes amazingly good value.
We keep coming back to this establishment for some of the best Japanese food in Melbourne. This time however the service was not up to standard. Maybe just a waiter having a bad day.... Not big deal. The food was great as always
It is a very busy restaurant even early in the evening. It seems that Uber Eats does many deliveries from there. The food was delicious and the hand rolls were overflowing with Fresh Raw Salmon and a delicious sauce
I've driven past this restaurant many many times and was so glad that I decide to dine there. Ayame has a lovely warm atmosphere, very courteous staff and delicious food. What more could you ask for.

Nice Japanese place. Great service and very Westernised. A place I can bring my old Russian parents. Not really authentic but it suits the area.
Standard traditional dining room with service bar on one side and kitchen at rear. Friendly, efficient service and good food
