We were visiting the picturesque town of Mirepoix during market day when we decided to stop for some refreshments at what looked like a nice little cafe just off of the main square. The menu looked a little basic, but there appeared to be some...space and it was in a shady spot so we decided to persevere. This was a decision we were soon to all quickly regret. my rating can be unfair as we really had no chance to try what this restaurant could offer. but we were very happy to find it! as usual, we began to think too late about lunch, and when we got our act together. all restaurants around the main square in mirepoix were no longer served. but a waitress at one of them recommended that we try this place that was just around the corner. She said it was good. it was also closed, but they said they could serve us an salate. That was good with us, because we wanted to. the salat was quite good, although not as good as the similar salat we had on the day before for lunch in sainte maurice. but sainte maurice was not in service, and chez paps was, so we...
Tiny kitchen and a total of two staff, one of whom was the chief, work hard to feed a variety of locals and tourists. Relatively simple menu, heavy on local product, with a focus on meat. This is a streetside diner, not a restaurant ..which is fine, as that is their aim. Between us we had a steak frite, green salad, and foie gras du canard. Your couldn't buy the volume of foie gras we ate for the same price in a supermarket, and you really can't mess it up. The steak was cooked appropriately, and the frites were crisp and hot. Good place to stop if you're in Mirepoix just for the day.
Only an entree and main course included in the menu. For another you can get a pudding too round the corner. The salad starters were uninspired and served on tiny plates. The Bavette steak was tiny and the pepper sauce tasteless it was...served with a small portion of chips, a small portion of tagliatelle and a small portion of potatoes. My cassoulet was OK, I was pleased not to have had a larger portion as served from the a la carte. The young lady serving (short dark hair and glasses) was a dynamo and worked very hard. Despite that almost two hours for three courses from the set menu was far, far too slow. My cassoulet was warm only and the sausage almost cold. My wife...had the duck with muscat sauce which was very good but her sautéed potatoes were cold and undercooked. My Dame blanche dessert was excellent. We waited an age for the bill. Far, far to slow and the food was not hot enough.
Nice restaurant just off the maim square, we stopped in for lunch on a busy market day and enjoyed a great cassoulet and veal steak washed down with a tasty rose. Cassoulet was home made and the best we had tasted on our holiday. The...waitress convinced us to try a bottle of rose over the pichet, only euro more and delicious. All in all a nice restaurant to stop at.
Good appetizers, good main courses (try the Cassoulet very good wines and rich desserts. The service is quick and professional. Nice sitting outside under an umbrella; inside a little crowded!
menu de jour looked good and cheap. the service was good, but the duck was very greasy with sorts of reheated carrots, which also overboiled and saw and tasted microwave. would not go back.

we had nice eating at this place but not when the manager had a service fee on the bill when we had a considerable tipp on the table! it's not easy if you don't speak French!
