There’s something special about Donovans: it’s an upmarket restaurant, but it is unpretentious. The relaxed, ‘comfy beach house style’ sets the scene beautifully. The wait staff are very pleasant and efficient. The food was delicious and well presented. My entree of smoked salmon was lovely... but if I am being over critical, the blinis was more like a puffed soufflé rather than the usual ‘pancake blinis’ which I had expected. My husband declared his main course of chicken pie the best he’s ever tasted and it was served at the table as the waitress placed the filling inside a rustic pastry shell. My sword fish was lovely as was our friend’s barramundi. The sides of broccolini, roasted chunky...
I 'm writing this as I had the most disappointing lunch at your restaurant on Sunday 27 March. Apart for waiting six minutes at the front for checking in, I can understand that with Covid check-ins etc. We were then taken to a lovely quiet spot...as requested in the restaurant corner, table number 52. That was the best part of our lunch. We waited 16 minutes until we were asked would you like some alcohol yes we replied . We ordered the organic Shiraz, another 15 minutes went by and I asked on two occasions could we please have our Shiraz. The reply was we are trying to find it. We were then told by your drinks Person that particular Shiraz was not available . We then ordered another bottle...

This continues to be a gem. We eat here several times a year and have been doing so since it's inception 20 years ago. The food isn't the 'nitrogen fuelled, uber trendy' but rather is just excellent raw materials cooked very, very well. Old favourites stay on the menu for good reason. They're excellent. We ate grilled Leader Prawns and fish and chips and while they seem on paper to be a bit 'ho hum' they were as delicious as ever. An appetiser of ravioli filled with crab in a seeet corn velouté was an absolute delight. Extensive wine list at the usual Melbourne wine Mark Up. Service was outstanding, as ever. And on a cold and windy Melbourne night, the atmosphere of warm and comfortable dini...

Had a large group of friends together for dinner. Great waiting area with leather couches and an open fire. Staff were attentive and knowledgable. Atmosphere was casual and welcoming and decor was eclectic and attractive. Food has been described to us as glorified expensive fish and chips but I think that's unfair. The menu was wide ranging with the basics of steaks and seafood. Entree to highlight was the duck and we enjoyed the pasta with seafood. Wine list good but not great.
A warm welcome from members of staff on arrival. The restaurant was quite busy but service was efficient friendly. We were shown to a table overlooking the beach , so we were able to enjoy the sunset. There were 4 in our party ....Two shared the Lamb main course said how it was tender beautifully cooked . The Fish Chips the Fish of the day was selected both excellent. An Australian wine helped to add to the enjoyment . A most pleasant evening .
We went to Donovans for my sisters 50th and was hoping for something a little bit special and it well and truly delivered above expectations.The food was fantastic but a great eperience is not just about the food.It must include the look and feel, the atmosphere which was 1st class, the location and views definitely help, that is if you like looking out over a beautiful beach.
Cost us quite some bit, but great view of the ocean, great food and nice service, very friendly staff. Good choice when at St Kilda.
