Places like these remind me why I love food so much lol. I'm on a mission to figure out once and for all which place has the beat cheesesteaks in Philly. This place popped up on my radar after hearing about through the grapevine and social media. I'm happy to say that people were not lying when they said it slapped, lol. What sets the cheesesteak here apart is 2 main things: the chopped steak and the bread. The chopped steak is low-key, the secret to bomb cheesesteak, because it allows for the cheese to flow more freely through the roll. In my opinion, this allows the roll to hold more cheese, and mixed with the onions, allows more flavor. The bread choice was also great. The roll they use i...

I watched Andrew Zimmern and several Youtubers come out here to eat so this had to be my first stop in Philly! Wow! The sandwiches here are the BOMB! What I ordered: Pork Italiano $13.95 Thinly sliced roast pork with the jus, sauteed spinach, and a sharp provolone cheese. The meat just melts in your mouth. Each element compliments the other so well. If you aren 't a fan of provolone than the cheese flavor will come off as strong. Cheesesteak $13.95 Generous helping of thin sliced ribeye with fried onions and American cheese. It is so flavorful and hearty! And not too salty! Sweet Pepper Cheesesteak $14.95 Exactly the same as a regular cheesesteak but with sweet peppers mixed in. Peppers brin...
What is not to love about ordering hot food from a window off the side of the road? There is nothing to not love about ordering hot food from a window off the side of the road. It is an American type of street food that you oft hear travelers to Southeast Asia speak of. Cheap(ish), hot, yummy, filling food that is quick and hits the spot. Took a buddy here who happened to be in town. He 'd never had a proper Philly cheesesteak, so naturally I went with a good place over the famous place(s). We each ordered a full steak, each ate half, and then took the rest back to the ladies so that they could share in the flavor. Service is fine. Ambiance is outstanding. You 'd be silly to not visit John '...
Insane sandwich. I ordered the small and it was larger than most regular sized sandwiches. I had the regular roast pork with spinach, and added sharp provolone, which made the total around $11. You order at a window and it's cash only. Yo that sandwich was STACKED. I feel like they put an entire pack of cheese in there. The pork is thin and tastes like it was doused in spices. The spinach gave the impression of health. I had it in the covered seating area. I debated saving half of it, but the pork was so juicy that the bread was basically soaked in meat juice, and I knew it would just disintegrate if I saved it, so I ate it all in one sitting and felt stuffed for the rest of the day. It was... Reserva una mesa ahora
Guidebooks will point you to Pat's or Geno's for the best cheesesteak sandwich, but many locals tell you to go to John's Roast Pork. In South Philly near the Delaware River, city views are offered with your food. With breakfast all day and many sandwiches on the menu, if it's your first time, get the standard cheesesteak sandwich with American cheese. It comes out hot with melted cheese perfectly even through the meat. It's very tasty! So much that the James Beard Foundation gave it a nod years back. Being a Philly institution since 1930, they sell Pepsi products. If you go for lunch, expect to wait 20 minutes or so for your food, but it's worth the wait. Outdoor seating is in the back.
I wanted to provide an update on my original review from a few years back. I visited again last week, and the food is just as fantastic as I remembered. I ordered the cheesesteak American wit, and I also tried the old school pork with onions and mustard (a recommendation from John). Both were incredible! We decided to sample the renowned roast pork and also the increasingly popular cheesesteak. The roast pork was excellent, but note that it doesn't come with spinach or a dip, so be sure to request those and be prepared for an additional charge. The cheesesteak was fantastic, loaded with cheese whiz and chopped meat rather than minced, giving it a great texture. The sesame seed rolls were perfect!
One less star for the lack of cheese in the cheesesteaks. Little dry for my liking but delicious either way. Service was a little slow at first but speeded up after a few orders were called out at once. For a place that's been open since the 1930s it still has a classic look to it for sure. Come prepared for the pricing as well. Reserva una mesa ahora
So JRP is a legendary place for cheesesteaks ... one of the best places in Philly ... and they never disappoint. The service and presentation are typical you get what we give you ... no cooper cheese, but they do have sharp prov which was delicious! It 's cold on the patio, but the messy steak will keep you warm!
