My recent visit to Kalvas in Parksville was a bit of a culinary rollercoaster ride. Specializing in steak and seafood, the restaurant sets high expectations, some of which were delightfully met while others fell somewhat short. Upon arrival, we were promptly greeted with warm, freshly baked bread. However, the local homemade spread that accompanied it left us desiring more traditional choices like whipped or garlic butter. For my entrée, I decided on the 8 oz New York steak and prawns, expecting the steak to shine at a steakhouse. Unfortunately, both the steak and prawns were drowned in heavy sauces. Great food in a laid back atmosphere. Really family friendly but the most standout feature is the customer service. If I could give them more than 5 stars for service, I would. My family visited tonight and unfortunately, my 4 year old dropped a water glass. He was pretty shaken afterwards cause he is usually very careful. The staff at Kalvas not only cleaned it up with a smile but reassured my son and made sure he was ok. I was extremely impressed by the service and would be very happy to recommend their establishment to everyone. During my last visit, the potatoes I received were lukewarm, and the meat was quite chewy and undercooked, as I had requested it medium. I later learned that the owner was cooking that night, which was unexpected. On the bright side, the service was excellent; the owner's son attended to us, and he was fantastic. It seemed like they were just having an off night. They did bring me a fresh order of hot potatoes, but the steak has been disappointing during my last few visits.
We've visited this restaurant twice, and after our first experience, we began recommending it to anyone passing through for a steak dinner. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the mashed potatoes are among the best we've ever tasted. The flavors complement each other beautifully, and the portion sizes are generous. Prime rib dinner was to die for! Brie chicken was amazing! Appies were yummy! Service was beyond extreme. Atmosphere was very comfortable. Totally a great experience……..until we paid by visa and didn’t leave a tip. (We tip in cash) when the waiter sees the visa transaction he asks wheres the tip!!? totally turned me off and offended me. Tipped him $20 for our dinner regardless ?just saying we are local?
It was a great pleasure been served by Ilonka, very elegantly, courteously and professionally. The restaurant is beautiful and cozy and the culinary is very delicious . We were 3 and we enjoyed the crab cakes appetizer, 2 veal Schnitzel and chicken with prosciutto . The dishes well served, generous portion and delicious wine . We came from Vancouver to visit around and we will come back .

We had an amazing anniversary dinner! The steak was the best I've had in quite some time, and the beet salad was fantastic. Everyone in our party was thrilled with their meals. The service was exceptional, including the young man who served our dishes—he was very professional and courteous. Had my father‘s 90th birthday there last night in Kalvas went over and above our waiters were excellent. The food was delicious for 18 of us. It was excellent even with all of us are wait for food wasn’t very long. Thank you Kalvas for the great job. My dad was very happy.
