The good things about this cafe make it a 5 star place. The bad makes it 1/2 stars. The good things are having a nice seating area inside, a broad menu and somewhere to have a nice warm drink. One of the staff has always been lovely and friendly. The bad things are it closing at random times, including bank holidays when you'd expect the park to be busy. Plus sometimes, not all, the customer service is appalling. If you ask if they do something or have something they don't have the request is treated like a personal insult. It's happened many times but the most ridiculous was when my husband queued at the window for ice creams. It was a busy day and he queued about 20mins, he was super thirs...
We had a wonderful experience at the Mad Hatters Tea Room for breakfast on Mother's Day. I reserved a table for my family, including my disabled parents and two young grandchildren. The staff were attentive and caring, and we were seated at a lovely table with roses. We all ordered The Big Breakfast and were delighted with the hot tea, crispy bacon, and all the other delicious items. My 83-year-old mother even said it was the best toast she had ever eaten. The view of the duck pond from the cafe was beautiful, and we enjoyed visiting the park afterwards. Thank you to the staff for taking such good care of us - we will definitely be back for coffee and cake next time.
I had a bad experience at this cafe in the past and decided not to return. However, a friend convinced me to give it another try towards the end of last year, saying it had improved. I was pleasantly surprised by the higher standards and friendlier staff. During my previous visit, I had given a negative review with specific reasons for my disappointment. But this time, the cakes were delicious, the tables and floors were clean, and the staff were attentive and friendly. I hope they maintain this level of service as I have now recommended it to others. Congratulations on the turnaround, the cafe has greatly improved and is now a much more pleasant place to visit.
I've visited this café on a number of occasions recently as my daughter lives close by. It offers a reasonably priced basic café menu of freshly prepared food and a tempting selection of homemade cakes. The staff are friendly and the place is always clean. The café overlooks the park's lake (they sell bags of food for the ducks! and there is a children's play area opposite. Please note that this cafe is no longer called Mad Hatters and is now the Waterside Cafe. The staff are friendlier and the food is lovely, they open at consistent times (handy as the toilets are only open when the cafe is). There was a lot of fuss when Mad Hatters lease was not renewed and the catering taken on by Derby City Council but it has in my opinion improved.
We enjoyed our lunch so much. We had egg, ham,chips and salad. Excellent value and service. There's plenty of choice but we wanted comfort food. The portions were too big for us but can't please everyone I suppose. We ate outside as it was a nice sunny day. Well done ladies will have a light bite next time though and a beautiful slice of cake and cup of tea
