We were a group of 8 staying here after climbing the Monch. Bearing in mind this Hut is mainly for mountaineers who are out on the mountain all day, we were served tinned soup, spam in mayonnaise, cheese, boiled potatoes and salad and ice cream. Not exactly mountain food after a day of extreme activity. The Host was really rude and unwelcoming (thank god for the young guy who had just finished his military service and was helping out because he was charming). They only open the washrooms after dinner so if you want to use the loo (which is outside) you cannot wash your hands. The drying room was cold and damp so that all our clothes were still damp the next morning. Bearing in mind there wer...

In a refuge at 3600 m. I just expect basic but honest service: cleanliness, nice staff – since they chose that job – simple but good food, and this even more in a refuge that is easily reachable by train and snowmobile. At Mönchsjoch hut, not the whole staff was friendly, the food was very low quality, and prices way too high (a 1.5-litres bottle of water at 13 CHF!). Only dorms were ok, standard for a mountain hut. I enjoyed much better service and great food at refuges that are really isolated, like Goûter refuge and Capanna Margherita. It would be so easy to improve quality just a bit also at Mönchsjoch hut, it's only a matter of wanting to do it.

We loved going here and would recommend it for the experience of being on the glacier. We found the good good and other visitors very friendly. It's definitely rustic so don't expect a shower or your own bathroom but the mountains are spectacular. The staff was rude, and seemed angry all the time, never interacting with guests except to charge a lot for water and reprimand us for asking questions. There is no good reason for their behavior and their terrible treatment of guests was our only disappointment. We recommend to go but don't expect a warm welcome. Also, check out us at 7am. If you're not up at 3am climbing a peak this is useful to know

Very memorable experience and worth visiting but a bit scary if its cloudy as you can't see clearly where your walking. Its not advisable if you have asthma and be prepared for altitude sickness.
