this location is usually only known (and frequented by) local boat owners, since there is hardly a way to get there except by private boat. Hardly, because you can in fact also walk there with a beautiful hike through the forest (1.15h) from Kehrsiten, which can e.g. be combined with an overnight stay at the hotel Baumgarten (beautiful, secluded place). For a group, you can also rent a boat or if the weather is not too nice, the restaurant staff offers to pick you up from Lucerne (call them, they will let you know what the possibilities are or can recommend a boat taxi if available). The Obermatt is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in central Switzerland, the staff is very friendly (family-style), the food simple but delicious (try the Aelplermaggronen). …plus, if you are a tourist, you will certainly have your off-tourism experience and something other Lucerne-travellers will not have seen.
I hiked over the Bürgenstock on a miserably wet day in the Spring of 2017 and thought I would never reach Gasthaus Obermatt.. At one point I was even chased by a herd of cows! Not kidding... But I finally reached the restaurant, my pants torn to shreds, my boots covered in muck. To my dismay, no one was around, until a kind woman came up the steps and told me that they had been on a break but were just about to open for dinner. The owners were the kindest hosts I've encountered in all of Switzerland. They were a joy to talk with and after my meal I didn't need to worry about hiking over the mountain again. The owner was kind enough to escort me in his boat across the lake to the town of Weggis, where I then took another boat back to Luzern. This place is difficult to reach but if you can make it, like I did it's worth it!
We ordered the aelplermagronen which is the Swiss version of macaroni cheese. It was AMAZING! It was 21CF per person, which was one of the cheapest dishes on the menu. Most of the dishes were 30CH . Granted in Switzerland it is insanely expensive to dine out. You have to go there by boat and there is limited parking space. We waited about 20 minutes before someone left so that we could park. It would be best to call and ask which time would be least busy. It has a beautiful view of the lake and the mountains. The waitress was friendly. I don't know whether reservations are accepted, you will have to call. I would recommend this restaurant.
We heard about this restaurant from a friend so we asked our hotel if they would book us a table for 8. They called the Restsurant and they said they would pick is up at 6.30 from the pier next to our hotel. Punctually we were picked up and ferried to this delightful place and made to feel most welcome on arrival with cocktails. The food was delicious. Everything has to come by boat we paid SwissFr 85 per head including the trip there and back, not bad actually. Definitely worth going. In the summer it's very popular so book and have them pick you up, that way you'll have no problem parking your boat.
