When we arrived at the restaurant (we were the first guests of the evening) we were greeted by a wonderful server who gave excellent service through an absolutely ridiculous ordeal. I have nothing but good things to say about our server! Chef/Owner on the other hand was another story. Appetizers were fine . When I ordered the $40.00 fillet of beef medium rare and it arrived medium by my standards, I sent it back to the kitchen. Chef refused to cook another serving. I have eaten at restaurants all over the world and NEVER have I been insulted like this. I don't know if Chef thought I had just rolled off the turnip truck or was some tourist that would probably never return but I am a resident...
If it wasn't for a good server, this would be a definite one star. The ambiance was alright, a kind of "fancy salt spring".Unfortunately, things fell flat when it got to the food. The gorgonzola tart was ok, but served with a plate drizzled with extremely sweet jam. The lamb chops were poorly trimmed and tough. The venison was absolutely terrible. I ordered it medium, and sent it back because it was well done. It came back medium/medium-rare (which was fine), but the texture of the meat was off. Almost as if it had been freezer burned. Ganges always a favorite stop on our boat but had been fine dining at Hastings House at least 3x and looking for somewhere new. House Piccolo recommended by locals and just a short walk up from marina was wonderful! Only open Wed-weekend small bistro in a converted house. Excellent wine list and well prepared menu selections. Warm scallop and shrimp salad had a nice curry flavor. Venison and halibut main entrees both prepared perfectly. Being Wed only had one server on the floor. We dined at House Piccolo on a Friday night just before the busy May season started, so we had the place mostly to ourselves. The atmosphere was very bright, warm and elegant. Jazz was playing softly in the background to lend some ambience.The menu was simple, yet very well executed and trended towards Scandinavian foods and flavours. I had venison, which was beautifully presented and perfectly prepared.We enjoyed House Piccolo as it wasn't trying to be trendy, or different, just offer a fine dining experience with excellent food.There was a decent winelist with both local and european offerings and wine prices were very reasonable.The service was excellent, both friendly and professional.If... The food at House Piccolo is simply wonderful. Beautifully prepared and well presented. White linen tablecloths, professional service. The only complaint is the physical space. It's small and cramped except for the three tables in the front room. If you can't get a reservation for a front room table, book for a later date when you can. The tables in the long, narrow side room (on the way to the restroom) aren't worth it, given the upscale pricing here.
This is small restaurant with traditional look and feel. The service was great. Host took to the time to explain the dishes and additional small talk. Felt at home. The food was good with no comments. If you want to spend a nice and relaxing evening in Ganges this is the place.
