My wife and I try to get to Tanabe as often as we can. It is our favourite restaurant. The food is fantastic and authentic. We love so many choices on the menu that we order around 4-5 entrees each, just to experience as many dishes as possible.The decor could use a little work (it's a re-purposed fish and chip shop and looks a little run down) but the staff are all extremely friendly and the food is so good we don't really care what it looks like.Make sure to book because it can fill up quickly.
We went there for the first time for a beautiful birthday dinner and were very impressed with the delicate tastes of the sashimi and chicken.Tanabe had impeccable service. We were advised on the order of the dishes and it was clear they are the experts. Remember to book as we heard even locals have trouble getting in without a booking, plus they have heard great things about the place.Lovely dinner, lovely atmosphere. Private enough with bustle in the background. Perfect.
Reviews for here are all spot on. Shared entrees, gyoza was really good, tempura prawns yummy, tuna sushi, salmon sashimi, teriyaki beef, all very tasty. Will definitely be visiting Tanabe again, still plenty to try. Service was really good, overall an enjoyable evening. Glad we have this restaurant local, we too travel to the city for good food.
Although I did not dine there on my last visit to Mordialloc I have previously. My son lives locally and dines out frequently and still claims that this is his favourite eating house. You have so many eating houses in Main Street o select from but this is No. 1.

The food here is great and authentic Japanese. I love it. Always busy is a great sign as they turn over the ingredients., always fresh. Staff are very friendly and the service is great.
Wasnt too sure from our initial walk in to this place, it could do with a bit of refresh of the decor but that is quicly forgotten about once the food started arriving. Delicious!
We visited Tanabe as we'd just moved to the area and were curious. The food was great and the service attentive. The decor is very tired but a good local eatery.
Great authentic food freshly made. Some dishes can be a bit pricey and as every dish is freshly made it can be a long drawn out evening.

Hard to get a booking as restaurant is always busy but they churn out great Japanese food. A local favourite.
Fantastic Japanese, worth going with a group though because there are lots of yummy things to share.
