I have been a regular at this restaurant going back to when it was called Butterfield 's. This covers a period of at least 10 years. There are a lot of choices when it comes to places for breakfast and/or brunch and this spot is always my first choice. Yesterday (10/8 we met out of town relatives there. We 'd not seen them for quite some time, so naturally, conversation and catching up ensued. I know that it was a busy time for the restaurant and the service was fairly rushed up when it came to clearing the table. Horrible. This place used to be so good but it was awful this time. I ordered smoked salmon hollandaise. The salmon was not smoked and was thick and rubbery and the hollandaise sauce was a weird color and tasted awful. I am not sure if it was old and reheated, but it was so bad I only ate half. It didn't look appetizing when it came to the table but I was hoping it would taste good. It looked like some slop you would get in a school cafeteria. This is such a good dish at other restaurants. Regrettably, my experience with the food was underwhelming. Although the ham and cheese omelette was expertly prepared, the rest of the full breakfast fell short, particularly the two side dishes. The hash browns were dry and lacked flavor—if you can even call burnt a flavor. The biscuit was so tough and dry that I couldn't even cut through it with a knife. It felt like it came from a pre-packaged batch and had been left out for far too long.
If they could improve their side dishes, this restaurant has the potential to become a true gem.

My husband and I ordered takeout from Butterhills, and I opted for the chocolate chip pancakes while he went for the corned beef hash skillet. I was thrilled to find that my pancakes were loaded with chocolate chips, both inside the batter and sprinkled on top. The corned beef hash was fresh, as were the hash browns and vegetables. Everything stayed warm by the time we got home. I'm already looking forward to dining at the restaurant next time!
The restaurant offers plenty of seating both inside and outside, though it tends to get quite busy on weekends. The service is quick and friendly. While the decor may not be as trendy as some of the newer breakfast places, it has a charm that exceeds expectations given the affordable prices. The menu boasts a diverse range of options, so you won’t feel rushed to try everything during your first visit.
For what you pay the food should be hotter. Staff is always very friendly. Hash browns were cold one time, turkey burger not close to hot the other. I don't know why its so difficult to do. Place is clean and friendly but if the food isn't hot, or even close, thats a problem.
Always a good meal. The service is very nice and people seem very pleasant. If you go a little bit later in the afternoon it's much quieter than the noon rush-hour.

This restaurant provides simple and budget-friendly breakfast choices in Northbrook. The food is good, though nothing out of the ordinary.
I always enjoy our family breakfast at Butterhills. Food is good at a good value and normally we can sit down right away.
