Food Koma The Global Grill

A marine tour guide recommended Food Koma when we asked where to get good shawarma or donairs in Nanaimo. Stopped in on Tuesday August 16th at about 7:30. We ordered the Halifax style donair and the beef taco with a side of fries, THE GOOD: the fries THE BAD: the donair and the taco THE UGLY: the entire experience. My donair had a few pieces of what looked like dried up sliced wiener instead of the more familiar gyro style meat, the sauce tasted like watered down simple syrup and the only other ingredient was rusty lettuce including one large rusty lettuce stump, my wife's taco had two rusty lettuce stumps ( compost in our house) and very chewy warm beef chunks , menu described taco as spicy...

This is a place that most people would just pass by in the downtown area. STOP! Go in.... EATwhether it's a not so healthy snack (is Japanese style poutine something you'd like to try?) or really healthy (large overstuffed lemongrass chicken salad rolls) this is worth checking out. This is not a burger and fries place, well not the burger anyway, but it is a gem of food delight. I had the Halifax donair, and a Kanata hot dog. The latter smothered in crispy, and i mean crispy bacon, fried onions and touched with maple syrup. Wow. We were going to stop in and order a bunch of food because we were told it was good. But the girls working were so not friendly. So I have no idea if it's good or not. They just stared at us when we came in. Didn't smile, didn't say hi, not welcoming at all. I'm not asking for a hug, I just want a hello. Maybe answer some questions about your menu...we left instead.

Kind of charming, in a run-down, no-nonsense sort of way, Food Koma serves up interesting takes on classic dishes. The Vietnamese subs are pretty tasty, and the menu looks fun enough that I'd like to try a lot more dishes. The service was friendly and fast as well - recommended.

Food Koma has a very varied menu with lots of choices from different cultures. The hot dogs are very good as well as the kebabs. And they are open late most days so it's a good option if you're out downtown and want to get a snack.
