There isn't a lot going on tourist-wise in Deadman's Flats - 2 gas stations, 2 restaurants, and some hotels. The more interesting and reliable food place is Mad Dog Cafe. There's just a small selection of hot foods, but they are really quite good. There are more items in the deli display. The ambience inside is very nice, and when we've been here, there have always been a few people around having an nice rest. When we were there recently, it was a bit hot inside (no AC) so we sat outside in the noise of the highway, but that was still not bad. Our food came and curry is very nice, and nicely presented. I've driven past this place a hundred times and finally stopped in for some take away. The first thing I noticed was my order was missing two beef samosas. The butter chicken wasn't at all buttery or creamy. On closer inspection it also didn't contain chicken, it was beef. I can only guess that my order was mixed up with a different dish. The beef madras was ok. The naan bread seemed to fall apart too easily, as if the flour lacked gluten to hold it together. I'm surprised at how messed up my order was, it was a disappointing experience.
What a surprise in this tiny ?village. A quiet, interesting place for an evening meal, actually the only place for an evening meal. Service was warm and friendly. A fairly small menu but interesting and very tasty. The platter we chose was enough for two and was delicious. We chose the curry and loved the home made chutneys we could help ourselves to. The platter at $16. was well worth the money.
This place is easy to miss as you drive towards Canmore, but don't. Stop in. The folks there are passionate about the food they create, and it shows. Delicious. A definite Indian influence. Plenty of flavour in their dishes. Also a pretty unique gift shop. Off the wall stuff you wouldn't find elsewhere. I stop every time I go by, for a coffee if nothing else. Love the place. Nice clean, out of the way place to stop for a nice meal and a beverage. Specialty coffees and teas.... A pretty extensive menu and a lot of curries and chutneys. All home made and pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of exotic spices or sauces but I can honestly say I really quite enjoyed the Pulled Pork Sandwich and the Papadums with fresh chutney were excellent.
This place is a little out of the way in Dead Man's Flats, but just off the highway and very much worth a stop. It's truly a hidden gem, with delicious, authentic curries and chutneys, and staff that prepare your food with love. The coffee and chai is also delicious. It's hardly ever busy. Highly recommended.
